This is my first jack screw opener and what’s not to love about this unit. Wi-Fi and App compatibility not only make this thing a joy to use but allow you the freedom to set open durations, close times at night, and also stay informed as to when it opens and closes.
I’m not a fan of using this to allow any delivery service into my garage, however, I can see where others may, and it’s also a nice feature to have should you need it.
Set up, probably took less than five minutes, syncing with the app included in that time. Fantastic unit.

Very happy with these openers. A good friend has one in his garage and I've wanted them since I saw his. We had our garage finished this year and decided to upgrade the openers at the same time. I love not having the old style loud openers over head. It really gives the ceiling a clean look. Plus these new openers are quiet, all you hear is the door moving. I installed them and they really were pretty straight forward and easy. Honestly the hardest part was installing the electrical outlets to plug them in, but I have good access above my garage so really it was just time consuming. I just ran three more outlets in series off of the existing outlets. Almost two months in and no issues. It's a really great bonus being able to check on our garage doors from the app when we're worried that we may have left one opened. Happy customer here!

  5. Never realized how useful WiFi opener would be until recently!

The 8500W is a great garage good lift. We have three of these in our pole building, lifting 10' W x 12' H insulated garage doors. I was hesitant at first to buy the WiFi model, thinking it wouldn't be that useful day-to-day, but have really come to appreciate the convenience.

The WiFi allows you to monitor the status of the door via the MyQ mobile application, checking at a glance if your door is open from anywhere. To clarify, you need the W-model for EACH door if you want to open/control multiple doors, there is no way to daisy-chain the control to non-W type openers.

Last week we had a rental company come early to pick-up a 13' lift from the pole barn, but we weren't home. When they called me on my mobile phone, I was able to open the door from 10 miles away using the MyQ app, and monitor the load/pick-up via my remote security camera app until I got there in person. It saved the rental company's time, and took the rush off me to be able to open the door remotely. Nice feature!

  6. Quieter and less "violent" than the overhead styles

I needed to get a new unit since there seemed to be something wrong with the original Genie overhead screw type unit. It's been 17 years in service, so it lived a good, well-serviced life. Even with regular maintenance it finally gave it up. Wanted to clean up the look and decided that although the jackshaft unit was more expensive, I loved the idea that it could be hooked into the home wireless system, as well as having an auto close feature. It's a beefy unit and the emergency battery backup in case of a power loss is a nice added plus.

Biggest plus in my opinion is the fact that it's MUCH quieter than the Genie screw drive, and it wasn't all that noisy. Sometimes the dog doesn't even realize when the door opens. With the old unit, anyone in the house could hear the door open.

Instructions were simple enough to follow. Once familiarized with what goes where, installation was fairly easy and straightforward. It helps to be a bit mechanically inclined, but there's also plenty of Youtube videos you can watch to get the hang of how to install. I took my time and carefully installed and double checked my work as I went. Took me a day and a half, including removing the old system. Now the area above the garage door is neater and nothing hanging down in the center between the cars. The LED light is now taking the place of where the old unit was, and love the added adjustable features of this unit. Auto time to close, auto sensing LED light comes on hands free and with timed auto shutoff once you leave the area.

With the iPhone or Android app, you can operate the unit with your phone, and I added a video camera as well to be able to see what's going on inside the garage any time I want. I can also check the open/close log to see when/if the door was open or closed while away. Oh, and another neat idea was the closing lock pin that automatically latches and opens when the door is operated, locking the travel to less than a foot once closed in case someone tries to manually pull the door open. A huge step up technologically from the old style. It's been almost 3 months since I installed it and we're pleased as punch. A bit pricey? Yes. Worth it? Oh, heck yes!

  7. Great opener, a few things to be aware of

This is a great opener. Very quiet. Took me a few hours to install, mainly because I installed the sensor and controller wires in the walls (I have a finished garage) instead of stapling them to the wall, and didn't have the right drill bit for the dead bolt. If you don't care about aesthetics and have the right tools, it should be doable in an hour or so. The main unit uses about 3.5 Watts when idle, or about 2.5 kWh per month. In my neck of the woods, that means a monthly electricity cost of about 65 cents, even if I don't actually open or close my garage.

Some other things to be aware of:

- the screws to tighten the shaft-coupling have square heads, not hex, and they're hard to get to with a wrench when you're mounting the unit to the shaft (see picture). A 12-point socket on an extension is your friend here.

- completely disconnect the door from your old opener before setting the travel limits. Don't just pull the manual release cord on your old opener, because even if it's riding freely on the track, it still interferes.

- after setting everything up, check the service menu on the wired wall mounted controller (press and hold the 'light' button, then press the 2nd navigation button), specifically the "transmitters" section. Make sure it shows the exact number of remotes you programmed. After I first installed mine it showed 4 instead of 2, because it apparently managed to pick up some remotes from around the neighborhood while I was trying to program the buttons in my cars. This resulted in my garage door opening when one of my neighbors opened theirs.

- while it is compatible with the Google Assistant, it's a bit clunky and limited. You have to say "hey Google, tell MyQ to close the garage" instead of just "Hey Google close the garage". You can't open the garage this way either, you can only close it. And finally, you need a $1/month (or $10/year) subscription. That's right, after you just paid nearly $500 for a fancy garage door opener, you're going to have to continue to pay for the privilege of integrating it with the rest of your smart home setup.

- if you have an older car, you may need a "homelink repeater", as this opener only supports the new "2.0" standard.

My first attempt was with the Genie and I was none too thrilled with it. Glitchy machine and made an annoying hum constantly. Installed the LM and have been very happy with it right out of the gate. The Genie app made me wait when I pressed the open button, saying "open requested.." The LM app starts opening the door immediately, and just seems like a better laid out app overall. The Genie has a wicked shudder when it first starts moving which is something to do with cable tension. The LM uses a simple plastic runner/switch to monitor the cable and is really not that difficult to install properly.

My experience has been that the Liftmaster is clearly superior to the Genie offering and I'm very glad we eventually wound up with this model.

This is the best garage opener ever. It's relatively easy to install, fast and quite (super quite kind of freaky) . It's a much easier install over a traditional garage opener. The hardest part is most garage's don't have an outlet where this opener goes. If your handy with electrical, you should have no problems installing this. For the 8500w they have improved the connector that goes on the shaft. Instead of a dual clamp system and a set screw, they beefed up the connector and just went with set screws. They also give you LED lights that are superbright. I found all the controls including the wireless setup very intuitive and they actual give you a way to disable the clock on the display, NICE !!! Highly recommend. The only downside it's doesn't work with my homelink on my 2006 Honda Accord but works fine with my 2017 Odyssey. Not a huge deal and I new that going in.
Update Feb 11th 2019. The -20 degrees days cause me to have to reprogram the garage door because of excessive downforce. It’s suppose to auto adjust based on the temperature but my guess is my spring tension went out of the range since I installed it in the hot summer months. No big deal. I just had to let it relearn what downforce was required and it’s worked fine since then. The nice thing about having the app set up on my phone is I got an alert the garage door wasn’t close. Another minor issue I learned was the WiFi does not stay powered on when a power outage occurs and the batter backup takes over. My WiFi and cable modem are on a UPS so theoretically they should both work as long as the internet isn’t down. Again not a huge deal but just something to be aware of.

  12. Nothing finer for a garage opener!

I was an early adopter to this type opener, and once I removed my old overhead opener and greasy track and installed a jackshaft opener I was a total convert. The garage doors quietly glide open and closed, GREAT!! I happily used my LiftMaster 3800's for over 8 years and while they work well, they lacked the modern features like WiFi connectivity, battery backup and LED lighting. I could have purchased upgrade kits to add these features but it was more cost effective to go ahead and upgrade to these model 8500W units with WiFi, LED Lighting, and Internal battery backup included.
I Installed the units myself and swapping in the new units was a snap, technically the sensors were the same but the new auto deadbolt locks are now 12V vs the old ones which were 24V.
These new units are even quieter, faster, and better in every way. The wall units are smaller and thinner, the displays can be programmed to show time and temp or not! Since I have two doors, the controllers are mounted side by side, I have one show time and the other show temp. They connected easily to my WiFi and the app on my iPhone and Apple Watch show the status of the doors and I can open and close the doors remotely from them. I like the notifications of door operation as well.
The ceiling lights included are very modern, low profile, and very bright LED units. They connect wirelessly to the control units and operate flawlessly. My only complaint is that I prefer "warmer" LED colors, 2700-3000k is much nicer on the eyes and these are a much whiter white, probably more like 4000-5000k, a bit cold in my opinion. I have all LED lighting in my home and have learned what feels best. In fact many Homeowners Associations specify outdoor LED lighting to be 3000k or less so I'm not alone.
I added compact remotes that I found here on Amazon (get the "Yellow Learn Button" types) as well as outside wireless keypads, they paired easily. Also the system paired to our Jeep's built-in remote as well.
Some will say that jackshaft openers are more complex than standard overhead openers, I now have over 8 years experience and will say that if installed correctly they are magical, compact and clean, I never once had any mis-operation in any way.
All in all these are just beautiful units, I could not be happier with them.

I wanted to get away from a beam-style opener. My install required a bit of work due to the EZ-winders used on the garage door, but not too bad. The area is a bit compact and my builder gave me some challenges to work around from the original install. The cable tension device BARELY fit in, but it works great now. Very quiet, works great, paired easily with my Homelink. Next test is the 'flash 2 pass' motorcycle opener.

Double check the Manual to confirm it fits your door before buying. Look at the " Preparation/Planning section Page 3 "
Silent operation, you can't hear the door operate for the any room in the house. " Very happy with this "
Only took a few hours for me to install it alone. Shown it to a few people, I should get commissions.
Easy to pair with accessories. Added 2 homelink cars, 4 2 button openers KLIK3U-BK, 2 remote light controllers 825LM, 1 Keypad 877Max, 2 Door buttons 883LM
A great feature. The Smart Control Panel 880LMW (included) it has a motion sensor is built in. It turns on the remote light 827LM (included) and my 825LMs are connected to 2 LED shop lights. Instant Light and after 5 minutes auto off.

I don't care about Wifi and did not set this up.

Was requested several times to write a review only one week after installation. So far, so good, it will probably work for you for at least a week. The wireless communication was a pain, Chamberlain tech support courteous but told me their customers cannot expect them to know about all the firewall or software issues for setup. They are happy to sell though. I solved it myself by purchasing a WiFi repeater that communicates through my house electric lines. I could then place the Wi-Fi repeater right next to the opener and got it setup and working. Had to spend another $120.
